CAROTID Exam

A carotid ultrasound or carotid duplex ultrasound is a noninvasive and painless exam. Using high frequency sound waves with doppler ultrasound, we can create two-dimensional pictures, wave forms, and velocities for the diagnosis of carotid artery blockage. This is commonly referred to as Carotid Artery Disease or Carotid Artery Stenosis.

The carotid arteries are located on each side of your neck. Narrowing of these arteries from blood clots or plaque build-up on the inside can accumulate over time and can result in a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or a stroke.

Risk factors for stenosis include age, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, high cholesterol, smoking and family history. Depending on the severity of blockage for one or both arteries will determine the treatment plan prescribed by your vascular surgeon.
